Dec. 12, 2016 - Jan. 11, 2017 - Dead period (no in-person contact is permitted on or off campus)
Jan. 12, 2017 - Jan. 28, 2017 - Contact period (coaches can have in-person contact with a recruit off campus once per week and on campus as much as they want)
Jan. 29, 2017 - Quiet period (in-person contact is only permitted on campus)
Jan. 30, 2017 - Feb. 2, 2017 - Dead period (no in-person contact)
Feb. 3, 2017 - Apr. 14, 2017 - Quiet period (in-person contact has to be on campus)
Apr. 15, 2017 - May 31, 2017 - Evaluation period (coaches can go to the high schools and watch the kids work out; coaches can visit each high school twice but each staff has a limited number of evaluations it can conduct)
June 1, 2017 - July 31, 2017 - Quiet period except for a two-week dead period from June 26 - July 9
The various designations (contact, dead and quiet) really apply to in-person contact and where it can happen: it can either happen anywhere (contact), only on campus (quiet) or not at all (dead). People get mixed up on what those designations mean, but that's what it comes down to.
