The Cincinnati game tomorrow night is an important game. It's important conference game, it's an important game due to the fact that Memphis is riding a 10-game winning streak and the game will be nationally televised on ESPN.
The city of Memphis knows these Tigers. The nation as a whole does not. Sure they caught a glimmer of what Memphis was during the Miami Beach Bowl last year but that was…well, last year.
A win on national TV against the Bearcats would certainly get some national recognition. They would be 4-0 (a very important 1-0 in conference play) and be in great position to be ranked.
Everybody will get to see what Cincinnati Head Coach Tommy Tuberville already know, "This is a good football team. This is not the Memphis of years past."
The Tigers are in great shape to be considered the best team in the "Group of 5" and receive an important Group of 5 bowl berth.
The National audience will finally get to see RS-junior Quarterback Paxton Lynch again. If he continues to play the way he's been playing, you should start to hear his name in the Heisman discussion.
Let's not get ahead of ourselves just yet. There's still plenty of football t be played. They first have to beat Cincinnati. The Tigers need to fill the Liberty Bowl. Memphis finally has a team they can be proud and now it's the fans turn to show up.
Everyone at the University of Memphis knows the importance of this game and how much Memphis needs the fans to show up at the Liberty Bowl. Memphis President Dr. Rudd, AD Tom Bowen, Coach Justin Fuente all have been on social media to promote the game and encouraging the fans to turn out.
They should, why?
The Tiger offense is deadly. They are 5th in the nation in points scored and 8th in the nation in total yards.
Cincinnati's 41st rank defense will have their hands full.
The 55th ranked defense of Memphis will have their hand full as well. Cincinnati's offense is ranked 7th in the nation.
The question mark for the Bearcats is the health of Quarterback Gunner Kiel. He's listed as questionable after being knocked out early in the 3rd quarter against Miami (OH) last week.
If he can't go Cincinnati will turn to Freshman Hayden Moore. He had 4 turnovers last week in the 4th quarter but he led the Bearcats to the victory.
The line has moved from a Memphis 4 ½ point favorite to a 10-point favorite.
Trying not to look ahead but let's say Memphis beats Cincinnati and South Florida next week, the Tigers will be 5-0 (and surely ranked) going into a huge match up against possibly ranked undefeated Ole Miss. Can you imaging what the Liberty Bowl would be like for that game?
Before that can happen you have to take care of business, you have to beat Cincinnati.
Will you be there?
