Another game, another missed opportunity.
Memphis had a chance to take hold of first place in the American West but Navy had other ideas.
Trailing 21-14 at the half the Tigers needed a 2nd half comeback to save any chance of taking first place in the West. Navy ran, and ran, and then ran some more. In all, Navy racked up 447 yards of rushing.
That’s the most the Tigers had given up since 2007 when ECU ran up 491 on them.
There were moments Memphis could have tied or taken the lead.
The Tigers failed on a 4th and goal from the 1. Had they scored, the Tigers would have had a 21-14 lead. The Tigers also missed a 47-yard field goal.
So instead of a 10-point halftime lead, the Tigers went down 21-14.
The 3rd quarter went back and forth and with 10:21 left in the 4th the Tigers pulled within 7 when Patrick Taylor took the wildcat snap for 7 yards.
Down 35-28 the Tigers had new life when Navy missed a easy 32 yard field goal with the wind on their backs.
The Tigers had just a little over 5 minutes to tie the game.
On a 3-and-8 from the 35, Ferguson found Roderick Proctor over the middle. Proctor tried to do too much and ended up fumbling the ball and Navy recovered.
That when Navy went in for the kill and sank Memphis.
5 plays later Navy was up 42-28 and that’s how it ended.
Memphis (5-2) is now 2-1 in conference play and will need Navy to lose twice for the Tigers to have any hopes to win the division.
