I've spoken to some sources and here's what we got.
The Memphis Tigers held their scrimmage in Nashville on Saturday and it gave all who attended a glimpse on the 2022 Tigers football team.
Quarterbacks are in a real competition
Seth Henigan started the scrimmage is an indication that he's still QB1. He didn't do anything to make one think he's losing the QB1 spot. Third down seemed to give Henigan troubles but overall he had a decent spring scrimmage.
Grant Gunnell showed that this QB battle is a competition. He led three scoring drives and seems to be 100%. He looked sharper than Henigan on the day. This battle will not be won in the spring and will continue into the fall camp.
Tevin Carter had a nice drive but with the way Henigan and Gunnell are playing it's hard to see Carter overtaking them.
Running back by committee
The scrimmage didn't offer any conclusions other than it will be running back by committee again this year but what was different is Asa Martin. With a new offensive coordinator in Tim Cramsey it seems Asa Martin has a new lease on life and has more of an opportunity for paying time and he's taking full advantage of it.
Brandon Thomas played and looked fine. Same goes for Marquavius Weaver. JP Martin showed flashes of greatness. There's a lot of running backs and only one football. One has to think which running backs will stick around to the fall.
The Defense looked much improved
I know it's early and it's just a scrimmage but Memphis fans can expect a much improved Tiger defense. From the scrimmage it seemed the most improved area was on third downs. Memphis was the 6th worst team in FBS last season on 3rd downs last season so seeing them stopping someone on 3rd down (even if it's just a scrimmage) is a positive sign.
KICKING!
Joe Doyle is fine in his punting duties. All eyes are on the Kicker. David Kemp was 2 of 3 on FG's. Are the kicking worries over? Until we see consistency in the games I'm still going to worry.
Were you there at the scrimmage? What were your thoughts?
