The Tigers had yet another slow start to a game and they still won. Your Memphis Tigers are 5-1 after beating Tulane 24-14.
3 things we learned-
Thank you defense.
The Memphis defense has kept the Tigers alive in every game this year. If it weren't for them the Tigers would not be 5-1. The Tiger defense ranks 56th in the nation in total defense. They are 2nd in the nation in passes defended with 44 and tied for 1st with a 7.33 passes defended per game average.
Hello Mr. Hall.
RS-Freshman Austin Hall had himself a heck of a game. He finished with 12 total tackles, 3 tackles for loss and a fumble recovery. Coach Norvell was impressed as well, "He’s showing that he’s a guy who can be counted on and has really established himself as one of the leaders on this defense.”
Darrell. Henderson.
True Freshman running back Darrell Henderson is fast. The speedster finished with 156 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns. On his first touchdown, Henderson caught a quick screen for 46 yards and tip-toed the sideline for a score. That score was a momentum changer as the Tigers went into halftime with a 13-7 lead.
Coach Norvell talked about Henderson in his post game press conference, "When you get a guy who can run like Darrell in the open field we know he’s got a chance to take it."
2 questions left unanswered-
Why the slow starts?
It boils down to the offensive line being young and learning to the Tigers as a whole making too many mental mistakes. Coach Norvell said, "On offense, we’ve just got to continue to grow and continue to eliminate those silly mistakes that are making it a little bit tougher."
Yes the Tigers line is young but they have been going against some strong defensive fronts lately. There will be and have been times where they will struggle. While the question still remains can they continue to improve fast enough to win this year, I remind you the Tigers are 5-1.
Is this team good enough to win the AAC West this year?
Next week will go a long way of answering that question. Both Navy and Memphis are undefeated in the conference. The winner will have the inside track and control their own destiny for a division title. The Memphis defense will keep them close. Can the offense do enough to take them there? Stay tuned...
1 prediction going forward-
Two weeks ago we predicted the Tigers won't lose another game until they face Houston. So far, so good with that prediction. Last week we predicted the Tigers would win the AAC West. So what can we possibly predict this week?
If everything plays out like we think it will, Memphis Coach Mike Norvell will win the AAC Coach of the Year.
