True freshman Seth Hennigan took the reins of the Tigers offense and started 11 of 12 games. Many believed that the heralded transfer quarterback from Arizona, Grant Gunnell, who started 6 games his sophomore season for the Wildcats would elect to transfer again. However, sources close to Grant have told TSR that in fact Grant loves Memphis and his teammates. While he had several offers to transfer, Grant will stay with the Tigers and is looking forward to competing this spring for the starting job. Grant and Seth had a "healthy" competition last spring and into the fall. Sources say there has been no animosity between the two heralded recruits. Interestingly both young men are from Texas and there appears to be a good bond that has formed with them in the quarterback room. A healthy Gunnell will make for a strong option for new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Tim Cramsey in the 2022 season.
