Bowl Projections

With Memphis on the cusp of bowl eligibility, it is time to start taking a look at where some prognosticators have Memphis going for bowl season.

Sports Illustrated: Armed Forces vs UCF
Bleacher Report: Fenway vs Virginia Tech
USA Today: Military vs Virginia
CBS Sports: Military vs Georgia Tech
McMurphy: Fenway vs Virginia Tech
ESPN (Bonagura): Gasparilla vs Vanderbilt
ESPN (Schalbach): Fenway vs Virginia Tech

I'd definitely Kyle Bonagura's prediction with a grain of salt. He has Boise State getting the 4 seed in the CFP...and there is no way in hell Vandy & the SEC would sign off on playing Memphis in a bowl game.

Women's Basketball Recruiting

Bryan, after loosing on Sunday in the conference tournament, the women's basketball season is over. Attention moves towards rebuilding. After watching several games this year, they need bigger players (ie guards) who can hit shots when open and shoot free throws. With the team loosing 6 players due to graduation, do you know who they could be recruiting? I was in Murfreesboro the past Saturday for the girls state championships, and here are a few players Coach Simmons and staff should be ACTIVE in recruiting:

2024:
Micah Hart (Gibson County HS) - 5'9" Guard. Class 2A state champion All State Tournament team, All State Tournament MVP, Multiple All state selection (3 times), Class 2A Ms Basketball Finalist. Finishes senior year as all time leading scorer in GCHS history. Senior year averages: 22 pts, 6 rebounds, 5 assist, 4 steals, 42% 3pt, 90% free throw.

2025:
TaTianna Stovall (Bradley Central HS) - 6'1" Forward. Class 4A state champion. Dominant defensive presence and strong rebounder. School ranked #23 in the nation this year.

Jaidynn Askins (Jackson Southside HS) - 6'0 Forward. Class 3A state champion (soph year). Garnering some Power 5 looks. Great rebounder, shoot from anywhere and drive to the basket. Jr year average: 14 points, 8 rebounds, 2.7 steals and 1.6 assists per game

2026:
Kimora Fields (Bradley Central HS) - 6'0" Forward Class 4A state champion (twice), State Tournament MVP. Class 4A Ms Basketball Finalist. Soph year averages: 24.3 pts, 7.5 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.2 blocks, 72% from FG, and already 1,000 point club. School ranked #23 in the nation this year.

Chelby Jordan (Dyersburg HS) - 5'8" Point Guard Class 3A state champion. Regional Tournament MVP. Quick hands and natural distributor.

2027:
Haylen Ayers (University School of Jackson HS) - 6'0" athlete (PG, SG, SF). 2024 Division II Class A state champion , 2024 Ms. Basketball Winner Division II Class A, and ESPN top 20 player for class of 2027. Intimidating size for her age, mid range game, driving to the basket, and good 3 pt shot. At least a dozen offers already. Has visited Tennessee, LSU, and Louisville. Her mother was former player who went 77-0 at home in high school, former Ms Class A basketball winner, state champion, and played college ball at Vanderbilt, assist coach at Alabama and Chattanooga.

Next man up - running backs

One of the three backs SIlverfield mentioned as a "next man up" after Sutton's injury was Makari Bodiford, a 17-year-old 5-11, 222-pound true freshman.

A really solid mover for his size. If there is no more injury in the RB room, he will play a minimal role, but he is still a player to keep an eye on now and in the future.

Below is his senior season highlight reel, where he totaled 24 TDs.

A Personal Note

It feels surreal to type this, but on Friday, my wife had a stroke. All things considered we are blessed- the only thing impacted is her speech.

We are also fortunate that it happened at 6am and not noon- we would have been on an airplane bound for California to begin two weeks worth of cruising.

So I may not be as present over the next few weeks as we figure out what things look like. Again, prognosis is excellent- but there will still be some adjustments. Bryan, Sam and the rest of the team have things covered.

Sidebar here: Please don’t discount your body. If things feel off, then do something about it. We acted quickly (we were at the hospital, she was on TNK/TPA within 45 minutes). We knew something was wrong because she couldn’t speak.

If you notice ANYTHING that seems “off” don’t delay- time is of the essence when dealing with stroke!
