Women’s Soccer Ranked No. 20 in United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll

Following an historic run in the NCAA Tournament last season, the Memphis Tiger women’s soccer team will start the 2023 season ranked No. 20 in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll.

“It is always a privilege to be in the rankings and it’s what everyone works for,” said head women’s soccer coach Brooks Monaghan. “You don’t want to get too far ahead of yourself since it is preseason and is based on what you did last season plus looking at the players you lost but this group that we have has tremendous potential.”

The Tigers, who found themselves ranked in the top-25 three times last season, went on a tear in October winning three of their last four American Athletic Conference regular season matches to put them in 4th place heading into the AAC Championship. They would go on to defeat ECU, UCF and SMU to claim their second consecutive Championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth consecutive season.

Memphis would stun the soccer community as they shutout No. 2 Saint Louis in the opening round match before eliminating Mississippi State with a 4-0 victory to move on to the Round of 16 for the first time in program history.

The Tigers will open their season on Thursday, August 17 when they host Southern University at the Track & Soccer Complex.

Football 2023 Rules Changes

Enforcing all players' health and safety rules continues to be the top point of emphasis from the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel. The Targeting rule will remain the same in 2023 as the committee feels the rule continues to drive positive player behavior in terms of the use of the helmet. The committee also noted last year's change to the blocking below the waist rule resulted in data showing fewer player injuries.

The most significant 2023 football rules changes involve adjustments to the timing and clock rules. The rules committee made these changes to drive three strategic initiatives:

  • Keep the game moving in terms of pace of play.
  • Moderately reduce the number of plays per game.
  • Ensure consistency in officiating mechanics managing the game clock.

Men’s Soccer: Tigers Release 2023 Schedule

After securing a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2004 season, the Memphis Tiger men’s soccer team has a full slate of challenging games ahead for the upcoming 2023 season

"I'm really pleased with how our schedule turned out for this fall,” said head men’s soccer coach Richard Mulrooney. “Playing six teams that made the NCAA tournament in the regular season, as well as CBU and William Carey in the preseason, who both made their respective post season tournaments for their division, will really prepare us for what we hope will not only be a run in our conference tournament but the NCAA's as well. The challenge is out there for us, and we will do our best to try and make the most of this great opportunity."

The Tigers will start the season with six non-conference matches. Football American Athletic Conference Joins Multi-Conference Football Officiating Alliance

The American Athletic Conference has announced a football officiating alliance with the Big 12 Conference, the Mountain West Conference and the Southland Conference.

More than 300 officials will be under the alliance’s umbrella, ensuring consistent training, evaluation and grading processes across the conferences. The alliance conferences will use this pipeline to develop a ‘bench’ of officials that have been trained and evaluated under consistent philosophies and mechanics.

Each conference will have its own coordinator of officials to manage its respective officiating programs, with the alliance overseen by Big 12 Coordinator of Officials Greg Burks. The American’s Supervisor of Football Officials will be Bryan Platt, who has served in that role since 2018.
